Statistical Investigation

By: Victor Chua and Justin Tan

Problem
In New Zealand, pollution levels are rising rapidly every minute of every day. One major factor of New Zealand's pollution problems are through transportation.

Question
In a sample of 40 students picked at random, Which forms of transport are most commonly used?

Variables
Dependent Variables
-The people we survey
-The amount of people we survey
-The questions that the people are asked
-The amount of people surveyed in each Whanau

Independent Variables
-The different forms of transport
-Distance traveled

Questions

1)What mode of transport do you get to school in?
2)What mode of transport do you get home in?
3)How far(in metres) do you use those form(s) to get to and from school?

Data

Graphs
This graph shows that 58% of the people that we surveyed had taken a car to school. However the other 17 people had used different forms of transport. 13% of the 40 had walked, 8% had ridden their scooters to school, 10% had biked, 5% had skated and 8% had bussed.

This graph shows that 11 out of the 40 people that we surveyed had taken a car to and from school. However the other 29 people had used different forms of transport. 6 people took cars to school and walked home, 3 had taken cars to school and took their scooter home, 1 took car to school and skated home and two had taken cars to school and bussed home. 4 people had walked both ways, 1 had walked and took cars home, 1 walked and then bussed, 1 had bussed both ways, 1 had bussed then walked, 1 had bussed then walked, 3 had scootered both ways, 4 biked both ways and 2 skated both ways.
This graph shows that 33% of the people that we surveyed had taken a car home. However the other 27 people had used different forms of transport. 28% of the 40 had walked, 6% had ridden their scooters home, 10% had biked, 8% had skated and 8% had bussed.

Discussion

In the statistical investigation, we had discovered that the most used form of transportation was car. The data had shown that the most frequent combination of transport was taking the car to and from school. The second most used was taking car to school and walking home. The data may have had been different. If more people had been surveyed, the data may have shown different amount of people taking the different forms of transport. To make the data more valid, we should have another survey with different people.

Conclusion

The data that we had collected concluded that most least used form of vehicle was the skateboard. People tend to use the car as a form of vehicle, however a car causes much more pollution compared to other forms of vehicles such as the bike, bus, walk etc. Many people that we surveyed had used the car to and from school most frequently, this suggests that the majority of the people that we had surveyed did not meet the required time of excersice by walking to and from school. This demonstrates that pollution levels around the Mission Heights area could lower if the ways that people get to and from school is more Eco-friendly.
